The story is set in a tertiary institution in Africa. The work is about OAU whose approach to higher education was one of hesitation and wide eyed wonder at the prospect of fulfilling his dream of going to the university despite financial obstacles imposed by his penurious background. He got a part time job as a cleaner in the school cafeteria. This was where he met Victoria, the overbearing daughter of the owner of the cafeteria. He grew fond of her with time. The school authorities jerked up the tuition being paid by the students by more than 100% because they wanted to renovate the school library. This led to a ‘peaceful demonstration’ by the students to create public awareness of their plight. Policemen sent in to contain this ‘restiveness’ used ‘live’ bullets. One of them hit and killed Victoria. OAU was overwhelmed by this tragedy and this was reflected in his extreme violent behavior during the ‘peaceful’ demonstrations. He was subsequently expelled. Is this the end of a dream? Is this the end of hope?
